Volunteer opportunitees at St. Luke's

People often go to church to focus and connect with God.  They also wish to serve God through Church and community volunteerism.  St. Luke’s Anglican Church serves Fannin County and it’s contiguous counties with that purpose; to focus and to serve God.

At St. Luke’s Church, we welcome visitors and those seeking to find a place to worship.  We offer many ways to serve God and our communities through volunteer opportunities; both within the church and within our communities.

The Women of St. Luke’s

WSL focuses on service to Christ in the parish Church and the larger community.  All women are welcomed to attend bible studies and participate in service projects.  Each year, the Women of St. Luke’s sponsors an annual Christmas Bazaar held on the first Saturday in December.  Proceeds from the bazaar along with that raised from other events go to support needs in our communities such as Family County Community Connections, Feed Fannin, Her Hope Pregnancy Center and many more.

There are fellowship gatherings of the women’s group including an Annual Christmas luncheon and gift exchange, a Spring luncheon, and other fellowship events.

The Men’s Group

SLMG welcomes all men who seek to follow Jesus Christ.  All male members of St. Luke’s are members, and men from other Churches are welcomed to participate in fellowship events and service projects.   Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month with lunch, and distribution of food to neighboring apartments follows.

Other service projects include the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper at St. Luke’s, ARDF Tornado and Hurricane disaster relief; wood cutting for Family Connections of Fannin County and other community projects.

The Altar Guild

Altar Guild members prepare the church and altar for Holy Communion services, maintain and care for the sacred vessels and alter linens.  Most of what is done is invisible to the congregation and is meant to be that way.  The work of the altar guild members facilitates and enhances their worship and particularly the Eucharist.

The Acolytes

The acolyte is a layperson who assists the clergy before and during the service.  The acolyte does everything from lighting the Altar candles before the service to leading the procession and carrying the Cross.  They also collect the alms during the service and assist during the Communion service by helping the Rector prepare the Host and Wine and bearing the Chalice.

From ancient times until now, acolytes have been faithful and conscientious men and women, boys and girls, who love the Lord Jesus Christ and love serving Him at his sacred altar. It is an honor to be selected as one who serves, and, truly a ministry to God and God’s people.

The Lector/Lay Reader

The Lector, also called the lay reader, delivers the readings of Holy Scripture during the service.  For Morning Prayer, the Lector will read the Old and New Testament Lessons, and for Holy Communion, they will read the Epistle.

The Ushers

There are two ushers scheduled for each service.  Their role is to arrive prior to the service and greet all the church service attendees and to hand out the service bulletin.  The ushers welcome newcomers and escort them to their seat and invite them to attend the coffee hour gathering following the service.  First time visitors receive a visitor gift bag.

Newcomers are asked to sign the guest book.  During the service, the ushers will pass the collection plate and hand it to the acolyte.  They will then prepare the altar for communion with the placement of the pillows used for kneeling.  Following communion, the ushers will remove the pillows at the alter and close the alter gate.

St. Luke’s Music Ministry

We offer opportunities for those who wish to sing and who are trained in playing instruments.  St. Luke’s has two professionally trained organists, Steven Cagle and George Atwell.  Diana Burden and Randy Wilbur coordinate music and direct the choir.

Music during Sunday services comes from a variety of eras, traditions, and ethnic backgrounds.  To glorify God is the aim of St. Luke’s Music Ministry.

Hospitality

St. Luke’s has many gatherings for the purpose of fellowship and for introducing new church members.  St. Luke’s hosts five Fifth Sunday combined services followed by meals prepared by church members.

We also call on the Women of St. Luke’s to assist with Celebrations of Life, Funerals, and other formal church events.  For individuals who enjoy the culinary calling, we are inviting you to attend our church and serve at these church events.

St. Luke’s prides itself in wonderful food and fellowship.
